Computer-Assisted, Partial Knee Replacement
Performed in Jefferson’s Department of Orthopedic Surgery
by Peter F. Sharkey, MD,
narrated by Richard H. Rothman, MD, PhD, Department Chair
View the archived version of this Webcast

Demographics, lifestyles, and other factors have contributed to a sharp rise in the number of patients seeking treatment for severely debilitated knees. Orthopedic surgeons at Jefferson will demonstrate a new approach to knee-replacement surgery that is allowing more patients the benefit of retaining the healthy portion of their knee and avoiding total knee replacement.

As a special educational offering, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital will provide a live, real-time webcast of partial, knee-replacement surgery that takes advantage of computer guidance. A new advancement in knee replacement, this innovative procedure will help more patients to faster recovery and a more natural result for knee-joint replacement. Partial knee replacement spares the functioning portion of the knee, making the knee-replacement operation less invasive. Accomplished Jefferson orthopedic surgeon Peter F. Sharkey, MD, will perform the procedure and will demonstrate use of a state-of-the-science, computer system for aligning the replacement knee components. Department Chair Richard H. Rothman, MD, PhD, will narrate the procedure, discussing criteria for knee replacement and for choosing partial vs. total joint-replacement.
